Four women, members of the peace group Ploughshares, provided the inspiration for this song when, angered by their government selling Hawker jet fighters to Indonesia for use against East Timor, they infiltrated British Aerospace and used hammers to destroy the weaponry of the aircraft. They left a video of a John Pilger documentary in the cockpit of one plane which showed the Hawkers attacking East Timorese villages, and then telephoned the police to surrender.

In court they faced a maximum twenty year sentence if convicted. They had already sold their property in anticipation of being sent to prison, but they argued that they had committed the crime in order to prevent a greater one being committed. Although this defence is almost never successful, after the jury had seen the Pilger documentary they acquitted the four strong women.
